Tony Neophytou - LGR
Demetrious Demetriou and Lagi aka Stavros Flatley won the public vote to sail into Britain's Got Talent Grand Final.
A nail-biting results climax, "The winner of Semi-Final 3 is...?" The answer is Stavros Flatley. This commentator hit the roof frantic applauding the Cypriot heroes in the lively LGR offices.
Next, welling up of tears (from me) at Demetri in his comment to Lagi, "No matter what happens, Thanks for letting me dance with you. I've had the time of my life, I swear."
The quote is gold.
The father-son relationship on screen is brilliant. The Winchmore Hill lads thrive on their very strong likeability factor. Demetri and Lagi wear their heart on their sleave. The honest perception is a huge factor in the voting.
The amazing rendition to Zorba the Greek had rolled out the genuine laughs. The proud dad explained the whole thing as being "very patriotiko" that will appeal to ethnic Greek-Cypriots. This might explain the votes tally from Battersea to Palmers Green.
The topless Demetri had borne the bold Cyprus tattoo, his Cypriot roots etched to his chest. The hilarious pair - had traditional costume, white skirt, black shoes, red bobbles and the blonde wigs!
Studio crowd, heartedly clapped along to the bouzouki strings. The track progressed to an explosive faster beat, with good comic-timing, prompts the synch arm movements. At this point, even his mates from ex-Sirtaki had jumped onto the stage, for a full-on 'Zorba-comic-twist'.
And Lagi, you may have noticed, was even dissapointed with himself for a moment, because "a tiny bit of the routine" was forgotten. However dad reassuringly noted, the "public still voted for us!" All heart here.
"Two podgy fellas who combine Michael Flatly with a Greek element" is how the dad crystallises the concept. A character steeped in the history of former Sirtaki Greek Restaurant, in Winchmore Hill. Demetri had run the premises for eight years. He now trades an electrical contractor (director).
Simon told them: "It is rubbish but brilliant. It is incredibly infectious. The final would be a worse place without you."
Amanda added: "I just love, love, love, love, love you. It is everything this show should be about."
While interviewed on LGR Demetri told listeners he'd raise the bar.
stavros_flatley_lgr_house_small.jpg"If we get through we want to top what we did at Hammersmith Apollo, we want to make it more special, we want to do something a little bit different, so people don't think we're a one trip pony. We're going to do something a little more spectacular and hopefully, wow you again, and make you proud to be Greek."
Demetri had thanked the listeners and community for their fantastic support.
"It's been just a brilliant reaction from everyone we meet, it puts a smile on your face, and as soon as they reach out to shake your hand, a smile comes on their face! If that's all there is really, that's enough".
"We did a silly dance, what a great thing to happen in your life-time, and in recession, when everyone is having a nightmare, they put a smile on someone's face".
Next, FINAL, a few less Greek elements and Lord of the Dance.
"We've nailed the Flatley and the Lord of the Dance" the father explains. "It's so easy, so natural"
The prize is a cool £100K and the privilege to sing for Her Majesty the Queen and Greek-scented Prince Philip at the Royal Variety Show. Nice one.
Demetrios, 41, and Michalakis Andreas (aka Lagi) Demetriou, 13, live in Enfield, with wife Karen, 39 and daughter Elle, 11.
Singing schoolboy Shaheen Jafagholi, 12, was chosen to join them in the final last night ahead of Liverpool dancers MD Showgroup.
SATURDAY 30 MAY, LIVE GRAND FINAL
Keep well. Tony x
